Birth rules

Can you, when
they tell you it's gonna hurt like hell,
smile and take heart?

Can you, when
they lecture you with knowing faces,
have none of it and all?

Can you listen to them
without believing without doubting
without grasping refusing
belittling bemusing
grudging judging
hailing failing to
breathe?

For you know, birth is
on your side and not
out to get you.

Neither easy nor hard
neither heaven nor hell,
birth empties and fills according to
your measurement of the moment.

Measure much and birth goes miles.
Measure none and answer the dawn.
